another one..

Second consultation had passed and I should be posting this after our consultation but I really dont have a time to surf the net. Anyway, a consultation with Sir RSG was not new to us but we're still nervous anytime we had a meeting with him.

Well, again it's fun. At first, Sir RSG had make fun of us, saying that he should not suppose to check our paper that time because the date indicated in our gantt chart for consultation perion hal already passed. He even told us to leave.(Sir was just kidding.heheü) Determined to finish our major paper earlier, we wait until he sat down and accept our major paper.

In the middle of the consultation one of my group mate Alyssa(gaubo..I dont know what's the right term..hehe)So Sir RSG had offer her strepsils, after that me having a cough also(gaubo.sorry I really dont know what to say.haha) But Sir RSG said that I was just acting so that I could have the strepsils also. In the end, I and Alyssa got the strepsils and thank Sir RSG.

So much for that.hehe There's still a lot of revisions that we should do. But atleast from 10%, our paper have reached up to 50%. And I'm glad for all the corrections of Sir RSG, because of those we have been challenged to do more and get better for our success in the future.

Just this morning, I've seen our grades posted in the faculty room. All of us got an INC grade. But according to Sir, we had until October 17, 2008 to appeal our grades. For us, we will not wait until the deadline. We were very positive that we could finish it earlier and I hope this time our major paper will going to be alright and accepted.ü

I just want to add, before the day of the consultation, my cellphone have been stolen. I was really depressed and I could not see myself without a cp in a day. But thanks to Sir because he lessen my depression because of the 40% he added.hehe

oUr FirSt consultation

September 29, 2008, our first consultation with Sir RSG came into reality..(hehe just exaggerating)

Well, it is really a very nerve-breaking experience for all of us because we have no idea if our paper would be accepted or worst be rejected. That time also,it was mixed emotions because before the consultation we also had to face the most nervous part of being a student, getting our grade on one of our major subject. Fortunately, I had passed our midterms in Prog2.

Anyways back to HRM, the moment Sir RSG uttered words we were just silent and listened carefully to him. It's because some things are running through our mind due to some rumors came out that morning. That is our major paper in HRM is good for one year compilation. Folks, believe me, humors are bad so don't easily deceive by the things you have heard without confirming it. We just misinterpreted what Sir RSG said to the other group.

When Sir RSG check our paper, the very first thing he asked is what is a paragraph? we were all shocked, what is the connection of that question to our paper. The answer is we should avoid using a one sentence paragraph. That's what our paper mostly composed of, a one sentence paragraph.hehe After all the corrections, we had all came up to an idea that before doing a certain paper, we should be consistent on what we are writing for.

I hope that we could finish at the right time and Sir RSG would be satisfy on our second consultation, hopefully next week.

God Bless to us guys..Especially to our group.ü

..oUr fiRst consultation ever..

Its really a very tough day for us. After a long period of time we haven't seen Sir Gamboa. Well he has his reasons, valid reasons to be specific.hehe(peace sir!) Anyway, our first consultation with Sir RSg gives a thought of nervousness to us. Is he going to approve or reject our paper? That's the only thing we could ever thought during that moment.

Maybe we were just very paranoid for having heard some rumors of having an INC in the passbook because he told some our classmates that our major paper required one year to comply. Well, rumors are really bad. We just misinterpreted it. So as we enter the lab1, mixed emotions had arise. But, as Sir RSG said his first observations, it really gives me a relief that if we will just focus on what we are doing, we will gain a lot of great things ahead of us.

..My Assignment..

VARIOUS DEFINITIONS

Laughing Carter McNamara, MBA, PhD defines Human Resources Management (HRM) as being:

“a variety of activities, and key among them is deciding what staffing needs you have and whether to use independent contractors or hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the best employees, ensuring they are high performers, dealing with performance issues, and ensuring your personnel and management practices conform to various regulations. Activities also include managing your approach to employee benefits and compensation, employee records and personnel policies.”

>> Well, it is right for Mr. McNamara to say that in HRM managing the employee is the main job. Also they are responsible in facilitating and choosing the best employee they could hire.
http://www.managementhelp.org/hr_mgmnt/hr_mgmnt.htm

Laughing Torrington and Hall (1987) define personnel management as being:

“a series of activities which: first enable working people and their employing organizations to agree about the objectives and nature of their working relationship and, secondly, ensures that the agreement is fulfilled" (p. 49).

>>In their point of view, personnel management could be applicable in the working relationship of the employee. It is how they work together and ensure that they have done the right thing to do for their organization.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personnel_management

Laughing Miller (1987) suggests that HRM relates to:

"..those decisions and actions which concern the management of employees at all levels in the business and which are related to the implementation of strategies directed towards creating and sustaining competitive advantage" (p. 352).

>>Like McNamar, Miller stresses that HRM is concern on how employee are treated in an organization. How they are manage to be consistent and more competent in an industry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personnel_management

Laughing (Cherrington, 1995, p. 5). Defines HRM as being:

“ responsible for how people are treated in organizations. It is responsible for bringing people into the organization, helping them perform their work, compensating them for their labors, and solving problems that arise"

>> In this definition, the main responsibility that HRM could give is to treat their employee in accordance to the rules and regulations of the company. Also, to ensure that their people are performing their job and getting the right salary and benefits in exchange to their labors.
http://www.answers.com/topic/human-resource-management

Laughing According to the wiki.answers.com, personnel management is:

“Within organizations that employ people, this is the function with policy responsibility for the selection and recruitment of staff, training, performance assessment, career development, disciplinary proceedings, pre-retirement advisory work, equal opportunities policies, pay bargaining, and industrial relations.”

>>In this definition, it emphasizes the responsibility for hiring new employees and giving them equal opportunities in all things . Here also, the trainings and seminars for the employees are being given in order for them to developed their individual skills and capabilities.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Definition_of_personnel_management

Rolling Eyes To sum it all, personnel management and human resource management is almost the same.

Personnel management mostly do their role to manage the paperwork around hiring and paying people. While human resource management is responsible in staffing, training and helping to manage people so that people and the organization are performing at maximum capability in a highly fulfilling manner.

So, their main responsibility is to give their employee a great working experience. For them to develop their individual capabilities and at the same time bring success to the company where they work.

..An interview..

..My aMbusH interview..

Well according to my other classmates, this is such a tough assigment because we have to conduct an interview to answer the question. But' I don't want to brag, I'm already used to it, thanks to our past activities which includes on facing people and interacting with them..hehe

Anyway, I just had an interview to a personnel this morning. I asked him directly the question given to us on what is his concept on the nature, scope and role of HRM. And he answered it generalizing the whole concept of Human Resource Management. He said," HRM is responsible for managing employees. The one who keeps and maintain the personal records of the employees. Facilitates on hiring new and skillful employees for the manpower of their company.
He also said that, " HRM handles the giving of salary and compensation. Involved on the benefits provided by institutions such as GSIS, SSS and etc."
He also added that, " today it should not be called HRM because as one of the responsibility of HRM: to develop and enhance the skills and efficiency of their people, it should Likely be called as Human Resource Management and Development. This simply shows that HRMD is responsible for conducting trainings and seminars for employee's development."

After that question, I've thrown him a follow up question is his concept similar to that of the management of his organization. According to him, " Yes!, because HRM should be the one responsible for all the things that help their employee on whatever aspect that he encountered.

I've really agree with him because as what I have learned in our past discussions, Human resource management is responsible for how people are treated in organizations. It is responsible for bringing people into the organization, helping them perform their work and compensating them for their labors.

I've like to thank my interviewee because he had given me new ideas about HRM. Because honestly, I still have to used my convincing powers. And after it, at last he allowed me conduct the interview..heheü

Yipee!

Last Wednesday, September 3, 2008, our group have already made our gantt chart for our HRM. So after doing so, we immediately submitted it to Sir Gamboa. But, unfortunately Sir Gamboa is not around because of some meetings and seminar he had attended to. We already panicked for the reason that the last submission for the gantt chart would be on September 6, or else we are amiable for a failing grade.

Friday came, still we don't know if our gantt chart was approved or been corrected. Thank God cause Sir Gamboa was already there on that day. As we checked our gantt chart, we found out that some corrections have been made. Just as the same day, we had been corrected two times and printed the gantt chart for two times.

At last, on September 5, 2008 on 2:30pm(I'm not sure with the time.hehe) our gantt chart was approved by Sir Gamboa for posting. Take note: it's our day of our festival. We're very glad for that moment because at last we could start for our major paper, and continue for our journey in this subject for a successful result ahead of us.

Our Company Visit...

Last last week I and my group mates on the HRM visit again our adopted company which is the Davao City Government. Unfortunately, we are not able to go there because some of us have another things to do. Also, some of them got a fever.
Well, just this morning I'm glad that all of our schedule agree on our visit. But still one of our group mate was not able to join us because Ymreb was rush to the hospital yesterday for having a high fever. Then, we immediately approach some personnel in their HRMO office so that we could have an interview again regarding on their HRIS. The purpose of our visit is to gathered data regarding the HRIS of the said company. Good for us that the City Government already have an existing HRIS. However, they instructed us to give them a letter again even if they have approved us last time to conduct a study. We should give a separate letter for conducting a study. So now we're busy for the approval of the letter and later on to continue doing our gantt chart.

SONA 2008

State of the Nation Address
of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the 2nd Regular Session
of the 14th Congress of the Republic of the Philippines 28 July 2008

Honestly, during the SONA of the President, I was not really able to witness it live. That day I was still in the school having our classes. But so much for that, what's the use of the internet..hehe

I've just read a 13 pages SONA speech and relating the points of the President to Human Resource Management, here are the following areas:

Arrow The President said,"Our P 350 million training partnership with the private sector should qualify 60,000 for call centers, medical transcription, animation and software development, which have a projected demand of one million workers generating $13 billion by 2010."
Smile Because of this training partnership, many unemployed people are given the chance to have a job. More job opportunities are offered. People who are skilled, like us Information Technology and Computer Science students.

Arrow According to the President,"Bago ako naging Pangulo, isa’t kalahating milyong maralita lamang ang may health insurance. Noong 2001, sabi natin, dadagdagan pa ng kalahating milyon. Sa taong iyon, mahigit isang milyon ang nabigyan natin. Ngayon, 65 milyong Pilipino na ang may health insurance, mahigit doble ng 2000, kasama ang labinlimang milyong maralita. Philhealth has paid P100 billion for hospitalization. The indigent beneficiaries largely come from West and Central Visayas, Central Luzon, and Ilocos. Patuloy nating palalawakin itong napaka-importanted programa, lalo na sa Tawi-Tawi, Zambo Norte, Maguindanao, Apayao, Dinagat, Lanao Sur, Northern Samar, Masbate, Abra and Misamis Occidental. Lalo na sa kanilang mga magsasaka at mangingisda."
Smile This Philhealth program really help insuring the life of our Filipino people. Especially to those unprivileged people.

Arrow "In training, 7.74 million took technical and vocational courses over the last seven years, double the number in the previous 14 years. In 2007 alone, 1.7 million graduated. Among them are Jessica Barlomento now in Hanjin as supply officer, Shenve Catana, Marie Grace Comendador, and Marlyn Tusi, lady welders, congratulations. "
Smile Well, this is really an accomplishment to be proud of. Because even if they are not a graduate of a Bachelor's degree course still they are given a chance to be trained. We badly needed them, skilled and trainable people. A lot of employments are awaiting them.

Well, I just HOPE that all these things she had been said will be implemented well. After all these would really benefit all of us. Let's just cooperate to our government especially to our President, to achieve all of our goals in making our country more prosperous and globally competitive one.
I salute President GMA for despite of all our problems and crisis we have been facing right now, still she stand firm and show how determined she was to improve our country.
PRELIM EXAM

Yesterday we had our Prelim exam on our Computer Programming 2 subject(JAVA). It was scheduled 5:00-6:30, supposedly we are going to take the exam last Tuesday but due to scarcity of computer units in the laboratory we are not able to join our batch mate. But then, I could say that there's no need to regret because our exam yesterday is such a worth keeping for .

Even though I don't perfect the exam and my program lacks one condition, still Sir Jappeht assure us that we already passed the exam for he saw our great effort. Yeah, it's really worth remembering because a lot of unexpected things happen but I just want to keep it to myself and to the people who are around yesterday. To end this post, I want to leave a short reminder: " Ayaw ug HILAK sa laing tao kay UYAB lang ang ginahilakan!." heheh =)

At Last!!

AT LAST!!

It was July 8, 2008 when our presentation in HRM was scheduled. But due to some reasons we were not able to present on that said day. So we moved it to Thursday, July 10, 2008 and prepared ourselves for the sharing. But unfortunately Sir Gamboa was not around that time. Then again, we rescheduled the borrowing of the LCD projector which we are going to use on the sharing. I guess, the postponement of our presentation is such a blessing in disguise, it gives us more time to prepare and more time to study our topic.

The preparation..
July 15, 2008 has come, the day for our very final presentation. Our class would start on 11o'clock but because I was so nervous and excited about our HRM, i really arrived very early at the school. Immediately upon arrival, I went to the IC nodal and followed up our reservation for the LCD projector. Afterwards, Ym, one of my group mate favored me to get the speakers one of our paraphernalia(for the presentation..hehe) in their apartment for they will be having their quiz.

The presentation proper..
11o'clock had come and started the ball rolling. We are five in the group and assigned different topics to discuss the Human Resource Management organizational structure of our adopted company which is the City government. I admit that they could not avoid to sleep and got bored of just listening to us. So as an ice breaker we taught our classmates a game which we called us Go Choki Pa. Then after that we gave each of them a lollipop as a bonus for their cooperation on the game. Lastly, we held them our experiences throughout the preparation, the visit and the interview we conducted.

My reflection..
The presentation was just so nice. All of them had fun and learned something at the same time. I was very glad because Sir Gamboa also participated in what we prepared on that day. I'm grateful for my group mates because we help each other to make our presentation a successful one indeed!

WELL, JUST KILLING THE TIME..

Human Beings..

"Human beings are the most important, potent and critical, resource of any organization, and yet the least understood and the worst managed of its resources"Question

Yes, I agree with this statement. For we people are the most vital factor an organization possesses. Without us an industry could not process and manage well. We are the "gem" of the company as they said. But why is it that we are still taken for granted? They always say that human beings are the cores of an organization, the cream of the crop. However, human beings are still ignored and misunderstood. They just give us less attention and priority. With this scenario an industry had, even of we are the most important resource, still we are the one who could destroy or pull down the success of an organization. So let's change this never-ending cycle. Instead of ignoring these resources, they must give priorities enough for us. They should take good care of these resources and nurture it for the attainment of a great success ahead. Razz

The Relevance of Human Resource Management to BSIT/BSCS..

Why does HRM is included in BSIT/BSCS curriculum?

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organization that focuses on recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the organization. Human Resource Management is the organizational function that deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, organization development, safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration, and training.

source:
http://humanresources.about.com/od/glossaryh/f/hr_management.html

Well the question really puzzled us when Sir Gamboa asked. For me Human Resource Management was really essential to our course because basically it was included in our curriculum rather than other subjects right? I guess having a knowledge about Human Resource Management is a great advantage on job-seeking someday.
One example is the profit you can have if you chose to apply on a certain company. You have all the choice to compare two company's, which is more good in terms of benefits or compensation you could have. And they say, it is better for a company to have a non-monetary profit instead of a monetary.
Also all of the right an employee have includes Human Resource Management. It is relevant indeed because it let us know earlier our value as a Human Resource. That's why no one could underestimate or deceit you for in Human Resource Management, the rights and the welfare of the people is the main concern.
As Sir Gamboa said, someday BSIT/BSCS will going to be the heart of the industry. Without us the industry could not process well. We could use all these knowledge to improve and develop our potentials to become the biggest asset to the industry.

>>LINEAR ALGEBRA<<

HUHU!!
Well it's been 4 weeks since the class started. Linear Algebra is one of the subject I had enrolled with. Originally, our schedule is MWF 9:00-10:00 under Sir Canda. However, Sir Val, announced that Sir Canda have loosen some load of units which includes Linear Algebra. We've discovered that we'll be transferred to Sir Dan Ratilla, a new instructor of IC. But unfortunately, Sir Dan schedule conflicts 9:00-10:00 MWF schedule.
Yesterday, Sir Dan met us to find a new schedule for our Linear Algebra. Again, all of his vacant time doesn't fit with our vacant time. So we have no choice but choose the very last option which is Saturday. At first, some of us objected imagine Saturday? time for rest, time for washing the laundry, and of course time for unlimited sleeping..hehe
But even if how we objected, still we have no choice but to agree to the schedule. Take note it's now final, Saturday 7:00-10:00(huhu!!). I just hope I could wake up early and could come on time.

Corporations: 21st Century

The 21st Century Corporations
As the google defines, corporations is the most common form of business organization, and one which is chartered by a state and given many legal rights as an entity separate from its owners. This form of business is characterized by the limited liability of its owners, the issuance of shares of easily transferable stock, and existence as a going concern.

So as asked what does the 21st century corporations look like? Technically, we could considered that our generation belongs to the 21st century in accordance with the Gregorian calendar, the 21st century began on January 1, 2001 and will end December 31, 2100.

Based on what I observed, most of the corporations right now uses unconventional system. They think out of the box. Their perspective when we talk about business is not the usual mainstream anymore. The 21st century corporations will be leaner in terms of human resources due to outsourcing of administration works such as accounting, hiring, payroll and other business and support needs. There were improvement of information system due also to the development of our technology.

The corporations have lessen their used of manual operation system. And most of all, lesser manpower because machines are widely used. They considered more of these high technology innovations because of the efficiency and easier job brought by these things. Therefore, I conclude that the 21st century corporations look like a more competitive, convenient and innovative one.

A Successful Ambush Visit...

Last Thursday, July 3, 2008, we successfully conducted our study about Human Resource Management from our adopted company which is the City Government Human Resource Management Office. But before achieving all of those accomplishments we had, we had also gone with many sacrifices(if you could considered it..heheh). Thursday morning March Dawn, one of our group mate, decided to visit personally the City Hall and followed up the letter we have sent them. She had been accommodated and been immediately approved by the HRMO that day. So they set an appointment that we will be conducting our interview on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 1-2 pm.

As our whole group met, we've discovered that three of our group mates will be having a quiz on that said appointment we had. All of us were very worried thinking what could be the best way to do.

Taking the risk, we decided to go the City hall that afternoon without knowing what would gonna happen on that ambush visit. Exactly 2pm, we arrived at The City HRMO. At first, we were afraid if they would entertain us even if we don't have any appointment on that day yet. We explained our situation. Unexpectedly, they grant our request to conduct the interview earlier on our appointment. They were very accommodating and gave us a warm welcome. I don't even feel the awkwardness.

To our surprised, Mrs. Florita Olegario, HRDD Head, our interviewee told us to conduct our interview at their conference room. And there they presented their power point presentation and answered all of our questions. I was very happy for the accomplishments we had that day. For me, it's an adventure, risky yet fun. And we never regretted that we had chosen The City Government's HRMO as our adopted company. Were very fortunate indeed!

mY FirSt JAvA Exercise!

Keep On Keepin' On

Graduation poem - printableby anonymous

The author of these stanzas has caught perfectly the spirit which succeeds in the rough-and-tumble of actual life.

Keep On Keepin' On

If the day looks kinder gloomy
And your chances kinder slim,
If the situation's puzzlin'
And the prospect's awful grim,
If perplexities keep pressin'
Till hope is nearly gone,
Just bristle up and grit your teeth
And keep on keepin' on.

Frettin' never wins a fight
And fumin' never pays;
There ain't no use in broodin'
In these pessimistic ways;
Smile just kinder cheerfully
Though hope is nearly gone,
And bristle up and grit your teeth
And keep on keepin' on.

There ain't no use in growlin'
And grumblin' all the time,
When music's ringin' everywhere
And everything's a rhyme.
Just keep on smilin' cheerfully
If hope is nearly gone,
And bristle up and grit your teeth
And keep on keepin' on.

>>This poem is from our first java exercise, specifically on exercise 3. Well the poem encourages us to strive hard and not to give up. It inspires us a lot to make good on our studies. We, Institute of Computing students could really relate for what the poem was trying to say. Because as they said, we are the endangered species of the university(USEP). So guys! We can do it and just Keep On Keepin' On.

>>THE BT Group HR Downsizing<<

THE BT GROUP

Downsizing

- is the act of reducing the number of employees within a company in order to decrease costs and increase efficiency, with the ultimate goal of greater profitability. Downsized companies either continue the same work functions with fewer employees or they decrease the scope of company wide activities. Downsizing in organizations is a popular management strategy. However, in the field of organization change, the question of whether downsizing practices eventually improve performance is frequently asked and is never satisfactorily answered. The consequences have not always materialized over these years. On the negative side, downsizing harms employees, their families, and at the same time causes social chaos. The possible answers could be the ignorance of some important mechanisms between them.

Last December 5, 2001 the BT Group as British Telecommunications has been renamed, eliminate 4,000 more jobs to cut costs. As the company faces increased competition and heightened regulatory scrutiny decided to layoff employees. All the new jobcuts are from the BT Retail division, which supplies telephone service to 21m customers in Britain. They bring the total number eliminated in the unit to 13,000 jobs, or 19% of its workforce, as part of a plan begun in March 2000 to trim $1.2B in costs over three years.

But the BT Group is not yet done with its downsizing because on March 28,2002.

The BT Group eliminated about 1,200 jobs at its BT Retail division by March 2004, as it closes 53 call centers. The job cuts are in addition to 13,000 staff reductions over three years announced in December. These job cuts that made by the BT Group have been planned and this layoffs done on March 28 are part of 5,000-6,000 reductions that BT have planned to made in 2002. The job cuts are through attrition or by relocating employees to other BT divisions.

BT has transformed itself in the last year from a company with global ambitions to one that is more focused on offering basic phone and Internet services in its home market...
